It was very sad to see one of my favorite record stores close down forever, but man did I score some killer gems the last couple of days of the sale.  Among them:

BORIS Pink (Southern Lord)

OK, I fell into the hype on this band, but for about $2, it was definitely worth the price. They no Melvins, but definitely majestic in their own way.

JOY DIVISION Closer (Factory)

When I first went over to my girlfriend’s, I went through her record collection and this was like the third one in.  At that exact moment, I knew I had found the girl for me.

IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS New Boots and Panties Deluxe Edition (Fuel 2000)

Stiff Records is the shit, and this is easily the late, great label’s flagship release, their Slanted and Enchanted as it were.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack THE SQUID AND THE WHALE (Ultra)

You know if any movie has anything to do with Wes Anderson’s film crew, such as the case of acclaimed Royal Tennenbaums screenwriter Noah Baumbach’s directorial debut, the soundtrack is gonna rock.  Here you have tasty nugs from the likes of The Feelies, Bert Jansch and Loudon Wainwright III, Dean Wareham of Luna covering Floyd’s “Hey You” and Lou Reed’s “Street Hassle”. 

JOHN MARTYN London Conversation (Island) 

The guitar playing on here is incredible…Any Zep fan should take note of this slept-on masterpiece from British folk legend Martyn, who I hope puts out one more classic like this before he kicks.

SUNDIAL Other Way In/Other Way Out (Relapse)

Hidden treasure from the early 90’s Britpop scene, who blew away the entire Madchester ecstacy sound with a style that was more Sir Lord Baltimore and Arthur Brown than Charlatans UK and Ride. Surprising reissue from Relapse Records, who are doing a killer job building up their catalog department with this and the Dolemite soundtrack (reviewed in IRT no. 8, thank you very much).
